An Easy Way to Make a Child Size Draw String Backpack

The Draw string back packs are such a fun easy way for kids to carry their own things like the special rocks and a water bottle.

Things you will need:

1 to 1 1/2 yard of fabric for the outside

1 to 1 1/2 yard fabric for the lining (if you make the straps )

Fabric scissors

Cording if optional ( I like making my own straps )

Sewing machine

Matching thread

Iron/ board

Ruler

Pins

pen or marker

Step one: cut the pieces out

Here I have cut out my pieces

For the pattern cut out from both fabrics the (outer and the lining) a 24 1/2in x11inch rectangle

For straps cut 3in x 48in rectangles

Two 8in x11in rectangles (optional)

Step two: pinning and sewing the pieces together

The body : Take one of the 24 1/2in x 11inch rectangle and fold it in half right sides (front side) facing in. From the folded side make a mark about 2-3 inches away from the bottom. Leave it open for the straps later. Sew the sides together. Do the same with the lining piece.

This is my outer side.

The straps: After cutting them out (3in x 48in) I like to fold them inward tucking the edges into the middle and then folding it one more time in half. A fun decorative touch for the straps could be a decorative stitch or a simple straight stitch.

Here I folded the edges in and ironed over it, to make it easier to pin and sew.

The strap guide: This part is optional I have made a few that did not have a separate guide piece. All I did for those ones is fold the top over and sew the edge all the way around. In this pattern I did use an extra piece for a guide. I folded the sides of strap guide pieces in and sewed them for a crisper edge.

Here are my sewn pieces before I put them all together.

Putting it all together: This is the last part of the project, fold the straps in half and place them in the inside of your outer layer in my case the blue body. Make sure that they are not twisted once they are folder slip opened end of the straps through the corners that were left opened, double stitch over the corner.

Once that is in place and sewn together turn it right side out and place the lining body in. Pin the strap guide to the top placing the raw edges in the middle and looping the straps through then sew it closed. Cut all the thread ends off.

In about 1-2 hours the completed project here is mine.
